Vegans in Sydney

I think few Australian vegans would disagree that Melbourne holds the unofficial title of Vegan Capital of Australia. Whatever the numbers (and I haven't seen the figures anyway), Melbourne seems to have more of a sense of a vegan community. But vegans of Sydney were out in force today for the 2008 Cruelty Free Festival in Belmore Park near Central Station. I went along and met up with three other vegans I know, watched Leigh Drew's cooking demonstration (when I tell you it was really entertaining, it's not just the free samples talking), bought a copy of her cookbook Vegan Indulgence from the aduki stall, plus a few goodies from other stalls, and generally enjoyed the sight of a vegan festival in Sydney being attended by so many people.

What I especially loved (we were discussing this over our lunch of Funky Pies) was the diversity on display. There didn't seem to be any single group that constituted the majority of the crowd — in spite of the tongue-in-cheek (I hope!) suggestion in the latest the(sydney)magazine that there would be "dreadlocks aplenty" here today. On the day after World Vegan Day, it was lovely to have visual proof, yet again, that vegans come in all shapes and sizes.

Yeah, they'd been quiet for a while, but thanks to your link I was reminded to see what's new over there :-)
