I don't know how to respond to this...

Due to some upsetting news in the very extended family (things are looking better now), I didn't attend the vegan Christmas lunch today to which I'd been invited. Funnily enough, I saw this on the PostSecret MySpace blog this evening.

Real nice. My non-vegan friends and family have never made me feel like a nuisance at all, but I guess that makes me one of the very lucky vegans.

Arf! That postcard made me laugh. I don't get upset if people don't cater for me, and I always offer to bring my own food. After all, there's no way I'd cater meat/dairy for omnis/veggies so I can't expect anyone to cater vegan for me. (They usually do though, nice people that I know.)

Nice point Lisa ... I sometimes, secretly and meanly, slightly resent the effort and cost I go toto self-cater, even though:

1. I wouldn't really want anyone else cooking for me cos no matter how nice they were and how hard they tried, it's just not their thing so mistakes are likely;

2. I think that veganism is still socially where vegetarianism was say 20ishyears ago - anyone can whip up a vegetarian dinner nowadays but veganism is juts too tricky (I mean, I'd be terrified about doing gluten free...) and

3. Now that you've said it, totally - I would never provide meat or milk for them so why expect them to cater for me? I'd rather bring something toally knock-out to eat and show everyone the yumminess.

Ooh but I forgot to add - that PostSecret is MEAN! and NASTY! and I'd be a bit upset too. I'm sure if Mr/Ms SnarkyPants actually asked their vegan friends, their friends probably don't want them to cater anyway cos Mr SnarkyPants is MEAN and NASTY!

I'm sorry you weren't able to attend the Christmas lunch either and good to know your family is doing better too.

And in regards to the postcard, we wouldn't want someone like that catering for us anyway!

Excellent points, y'all!

I was mostly just made slightly uneasy by the idea (this being from PostSecret and all) that this person was harbouring a secret grudge against his/her vegan friends. And it's something I've wondered about myself: is it fair that I wouldn't cater with meat for my visitors in return?

As you say, Lisa, we can just look at it the other way, and say "I don't expect you to cater for me, so I'll bring something myself" (which I frequently offer to do).

Unfortunately, even when I offer to bring my own stuff, most people don't "get" my diet lifestyle (especially since I can't actually digest animal protein) and they think that I can just make an exception! So often I feel like a burden when I go out so it's just easier to stay home! Sigh... I'm so glad you don't have that crap on your end!!

PS - what's the "Carmelina's Explosive Spread" you talked about earlier in your cheeze post? It sounds awesome!

Oh, it is, Sarah, it is... Eggplant, chili peppers, olive oil, tomatoes and a few other natural ingredients, all ground up into a pesto-like consistency. Completely delicious if you like things with a bit of burn :-)
